KELLY’S PORTRAIT AND FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY PRIVILEGES SIMPLICITY, NATURAL BEAUTY, AND AN ESSENTIALIST’S EYE FOR DETAILS BOTH TECHNICAL AND SENSUAL.

Her beauty and fashion images have balance and control, and the endless, luminous curves and deep contrasts make for subtle moods and tones that carry across into her portrait and travel photography. In a world of images blinded and overblown with flashes and blasted with hi-octane poses, it’s easy to forget the staying power of shooting with sensitivity, precision, and poise, and her work for RUSSH, Burberry, World Vision, and Side-Note speaks for itself. TSUKI talked to her about her work, process, and life at the moment

HOW DO YOU CREATE FROM HOME? HOW HAS THIS BEEN DIFFERENT FROM YOUR REGULAR PROCESS? HOW HAS LOCKDOWN LIFE ALTERED YOUR WORK?

Normally I photograph on shoots with quite a few people on set, so it’s different in the sense that it’s more personal. Creating from home allows flexibility and time to experiment with different ideas at your own pace, without a particular brief in mind. Sometimes it’s nice just to play around with a concept you’ve been mulling over without too much emphasis on the outcome; creativity without the usual constraints can lead you down interesting avenues.

HAS THIS SITUATION ENCOURAGED OR EVEN DEMANDED YOU TO TRY SOMETHING NEW?

I think the situation has encouraged a lot of introspection for me. I haven’t necessarily been compelled to shoot lots of new work during this time but have used it as a chance to shoot occasionally for myself and reflect on what I would like to create moving forward.

HOW ARE YOU STAYING INSPIRED AND MOTIVATED?

Restrictions are currently starting to ease a little over here in Australia, but especially during lockdown I found staying in touch with friends and family helped me stay motivated. I also find spending time in nature helps me feel inspired.
